Onions botanically called as Allium cepa are native to Asia and The Middle East. Onion is considered as vegetable, primarily used as a food source in Indian and other Asian cooking. It is used in making curries, soups and chutneys and can be eaten raw in the form of salads.
Onions bring tears from eyes when they are sliced; it is because of the presence of sulphur compounds. They also have a strong pungent odor which causes a bad breath. Leaving these two facts behind onion is a very healthy vegetable and also cures many disease conditions.

  • In Ayurveda and Herbal medicine, onions are used for treatment of many ailments. Onions are more beneficial when eaten raw. They maintain higher nutrient levels when not dipped in water. However, cooked onions also retain sufficient nutrients to be beneficial to health.
  • Onions work as the best relievers for respiratory problems like cough, common cold, flu, bronchitis and also clears phlegm.
  • Onion juice prevents gastric ulcers, stimulates the peristaltic movement of the intestines, removes flatulence and improves the process of digestion.
  • Onions provide energy and act as a tonic and also as a stimulant.
  • The antibiotic and anti-septic properties present in Onions help in removing worms.

How to Use Onions in Specific Health Conditions

In Common Cold: Eating raw onion daily with curd rice or salad relieves sneezing & running nose. The strong smell of onion helps in controlling common cold.

For Cough: 2tsp. of onion juice, 1tsp.of ginger extract taken with honey controls wet cough & flu symptoms. It removes phlegm and clears the lungs.

For Acidity: Mix 60 g white onions which are cut into small pieces in 30 g curd. Eat this mixture 3 times daily for a week to get relief from acidity.

In Asthma:
a. To keep asthma in control, mix 1 tsp. onion juice, 1tsp. ginger extract, a pinch of pepper and a pinch of salt. Take this mix daily thrice.
b. Crush onions and inhale the vapors for relief in cough, throat and respiratory diseases and lung affections.
c. Add honey to onion juice and take this for relief in asthmatic cough.

For Dyspepsia:  Cut red onions into slices and add some lime juice to them.Have them with your meals daily to get relief from Dyspepsia.

In Dysentery: Take one red onion which is properly washed and cut it  into slices. Add fresh curd which is made of cow’s milk and have it in your dinner. This helps in relieving from mucus and bloody stools.

In Diarrhea: Take few onions and grind them into mixture. Now apply this mixture around the navel to control loose motions along with the other treatment options.

For Digestion Problems:  Onion consumption increases appetite and helps in food digestion. Heat an onion bulb on flame and take out its juice. Add some salt and drink it.

In Jaundice:  Cut onions into four halves and dip them in a jar containing lemon juice. Add some salt and black pepper to these slices. Now eat these slices twice daily in morning and evening to get relief from jaundice.

For Urinary Problems:
a. Boil 50g of onion pieces in one litre of water and strain this water. Now add honey to this. Drink it daily thrice to get relief from the problems like frequent urination, burning sensation and painful urination.
b. Eating raw onion frequently during the day increases urine output & benefits.
